Taking photographs for a nursery is a very different way of working, instead of having a few hours to get to know a child I have about 5 minutes! It’s fast, fun and there’s a lot of singing and peekaboo required. Black and white school photographs are a bit different but they are always really popular. It’s really lovely when I photograph families to take some time (I usually start with a cup of tea) to just chat and get to know everyone a little before starting to take some photos. Although I use both film and digital cameras, my background and my heart is in film photography especially using black and white. When I started working as a commercial photographer I would use large format (5×4) all the time but it was mostly for products shots. It’s a lot more challenging to photograph children on 5×4….they move!! It really is a different experience to how I usually work, it’s definitely not quick and I do look slightly ridiculous under a big black hood but I really enjoyed it and would love to do some more.

Toddlers are huge fun to photograph. They are just too little to worry about the camera so it’s usually a lot of play (Woody was a bit of a favourite in this session), a bit of singing and letting them do their own thing.

Welcome to my new Blog. I much prefer taking photographs to writing so there may not be many words on here but hopefully lots of recent work, news about exhibitions and photos of beautiful frames and photobooks. There maybe even the odd photograph of my daughter….if she lets me. If you read my old blog you may remember she’s not a fan of me taking her picture although recently I’ve found bribery works wonders!
To start with, some recent studio shots. I don’t often do portraits in the studio as I think it’s more fun to photograph children out and about but every now and then it’s really good to do something different especially using medium and large format film. These are a mix of medium format film and digital.
